Water wise gardening is merely smart. We need to save as much water as we can because our population continues to grow and - like you say - the climate has been warming for about 25,000 years now. It aint slowing down either.

I really appreciate landscape designers and architects who also incorporate water saving mechanisms into their garden layout and watering system. While everyone would love having lush green gardens, we should also be conscious about our limited water supply. Thanks to global warming.

Thanks, Justin and James, for your comments. Yes, James, the remarkable thing about Reno is the absurd amount of sun they get. I think the plants that like that - love it. It makes perennial planting and shrubbery work that much easier, in a way. Couple the overly alkaline soils with some good acidic stuff and you're off to the races, with water.

Very impressive transformation from year 1 to year 2 in the garden you show, Steve. A little water helps, but your good planning helped make the changes possible.

I finally put in some drip lines last fall. I water more frequently now, but the water gets to more focused places and I'm sure I'm using less water. (In the past I think the brick patio got as much hose water as did the plants...)

Frances, most emitters are "pre-programmed". You just buy the little suckers and they do their jobs. They come in a wide variety of sizes, from 1/2 GPH all the way up to 25 GPH. Same size............tiny.

There are also some adjustable ones, very, very useful for things like hanging baskets. And, yes, you can tack an irrigation line somewhere along the braces of your porch or Gazebo roof and run the water up to your plants. Just this alone makes drip as beneficial as anything else. Imagine watering hanging baskets on a timer.

You just keep talking about pavers for your driveway, lol. Is the old man resisting, is that it? Hey - remember what I told you - I work for beer! ;-)

Hi Steve, once again you remind us of your ultimate wisdom in all things garden, (and driveway). I didn't even realize the emitters could be programmed for different amounts. The Reno situation is a good example of beauty plus responsibility. Would that you could convert all the people there who think an English lawn is the epitome of gardening, even in the desert. And convert my driveway to pavers. :-)
